The Sport

What is Padel?

Padel is one of the fastest-growing racket sports in Europe and the UK. It combines elements of tennis and squash and is played mainly in doubles, making it extremely social, beginner-friendly and accessible for all ages.

Project Update

The original concept explored the possibility of building padel courts on grassland near Kings Parade and Coastal Drive.

Following early conversations with local organisations and stakeholders, it became clear that this particular area may be difficult to develop due to its surrounding constraints and competing uses.

Because of that feedback, the project is now exploring an alternative nearby location within Marine Park, on the site of the former bowling green beside the existing tennis courts and public facilities.

Importantly, the goal of the project has not changed: to introduce padel to the Wallasey / New Brighton area and create a welcoming, community-focused place for people to play sport.

Now being explored

Former bowling green at Marine Park, New Brighton

The Site

Marine Park, New Brighton

The current location being explored is the former bowling green area within Marine Park, New Brighton.

This site sits next to the existing public tennis courts and facilities, making it a natural location for racket sports and recreational activity.

As the land was previously used for bowls, it may provide a suitable opportunity to introduce outdoor padel courts while retaining the park's open and active character.

Why This Location Works

  • Next to existing tennis courts and recreational facilities
  • Previously used as a bowling green
  • Close to public toilets and an existing building for a kiosk or refreshment point
  • Walking distance from New Brighton town centre and the promenade
  • Accessible from surrounding residential streets and local amenities
  • Opportunity to create a community racket sports hub within Marine Park

Why New Brighton?

  • Strong local demand already shown through survey responses
  • Walking distance from cafés, bars and local businesses
  • Close to schools and residential areas
  • Easy to reach on foot, by bike and by public transport
  • Opportunity to bring new sport and healthy activity to the area
  • Potential to strengthen Marine Park as a destination for recreation

The concept would use only a portion of the wider park setting while building on the site's existing recreational history.

The Vision

Concept Images

These visuals show what a small padel venue could look like within Marine Park. They are for illustration only, intended to help visualise how the former bowling green could be reused.
